I am 19 years old and am interested in rhinoplasty

Q. Hi I am 19 years old and am interested in rhinoplasty. Firstly, I am a student so the price is terrifying and was wandering whether I would be eligible through the nhs, I obtained a humped nose through injury and my breathing is fairly constricted but not so much so that it hugely affects my health, so what do you think. Secondly, it says that you have to pay for consultation fees via cheque only I don’t have a cheque would cash be ok. Thirdly, what is the long term effect of rhinoplasty, like say after 1-2 years everything seems ok is that you sorted for the rest of your life or is it known that patients suffer complications further down the line as they get older. Thank You Dr Shoaib.,

A. You may be able to get a rhinoplasty on the NHS, but you need to go through your GP and go through the NHS system of assessment, including psychological assessment and assessment of your nose. Depending on who you get, you may have your breathing treated too. You can certainly ask your GP to refer you directly to me and we can take it from there. You can pay your consultation with me either by cash, cheque or card. Long term problems can happen after a rhinoplasty but we now have better understandings of what we should and shouldn’t do at the time of a rhinoplasty so hopefully we can prevent these.

I was just wandering once you have had your rhinoplasty surgery obviously your nose will be fragile

Q. Hi Dr Taimur Shoaib. I was just wandering once you have had your rhinoplasty surgery obviously your nose will be fragile, so what would you do if you had to sneeze and if you couldn’t stop your sneeze would it hurt and would it have a negative effect on your recovery. Thank You,

A. Hi there. We obviously can’t stop anyone from sneezing, but I do say is to try and not blow your nose after the operation. It’s OK to sniff, but not OK to pick the nose either! I say this as your nose can start bleeding after this type of activity. It can be difficult to stop nose bleeds and sometimes they need packing or cautery.

I am 19 years of age and have an unsightly humped nose

Q. I am 19 years of age and have an unsightly humped nose. if i were to come to you for rhinoplasty in order to obtain a straight profile how would you go about this. also is it possible that my nose may collapse following surgery (as i have read a few cases referring to collapsed noses). thank you,

A. Hi there. When someone asks me to simply remove a bump, then a rhinoplasty is relatively straightforward. It involves getting to the bones of the nose from inside the nostril, shaving down the hump and then pushing the bones back together again. The operation takes about an hour, most people stay one night with packs in the nose overnight, there’s a plaster on the nose for a week, and there is one stitch on either side of the nose where the bones have been broken to push them together. I can show you some pictures of people I have treated before if you come for a consultation and we can talk about the risks, which are obviously worrying you. If you do have a problem then we usually identify it within a year, and your covered for revision surgery during that time. Having said that, one of my patients had a minor problem two years after surgery and I tweaked things for free at that stage. So, while it’s important to be aware of risks, it’s also important to know what risks are most likely to occur with you and we can discuss these at a consultation.

I have had parry rombergs syndrome since the age of 14 and subsequently been receiving fat injections

Q. I have had parry rombergs syndrome since the age of 14 and subsequently been receiving fat injections by mr sivarajan, whom you may know to correct this which has worked dramatically well. however iam still left with a severely deviated septum which basically makes my nose look as if it is sitting on one side of my face, as i truly believe that this is making my unsymetry look worse than what it is how possibly is it to fully correct the nose when it has been damaged like this for so long?? will i need further surgeries???,

A. Parry Romberg’s disease can sometimes affect the bones as well as the fat. If the disease has affected the bones that make up your nose and if these are beginning to shrink back, then the treatment needs to be directed here as well as to the fat. As I say, it all depends on what you see, and when you next see your surgeon at Canniesburn, I’m sure he would be delighted to speak to you about your nose.

I am a 19 year old student and have a unsightly humped nose obtained via injury

Q. hI. I am a 19 year old student and have a unsightly humped nose obtained via injury. i was wanting to know your opinion on my chances of having rhinoplasty through the nhs. and if so do you have any idea of their waiting times.,

A. Thank you for your enquiry. I suggest that you discuss this matter with your GP, as he or she would need to refer you. A significant change in the nasal shape due to trauma, it is usually considered for treatment through the NHS, but local guidelines may vary. The waiting time has become shorter, but in general still involves several months for low priority interventions.

I recently spoke to a friend that had rhinoplasty to reduce the size of his nose

Q. I recently spoke to a friend that had rhinoplasty to reduce the size of his nose.nad he told me he was still ahving breathing difficulties 6 months after surgery. Is this a normal thing to happen. I ask as I has also have been considering getting my nose reshaped but this is something that does concern me. You thoughts will be most welcome.,

A. Thank you for your email. Your friend should consult the surgeon who performed the operation to inquire about the breathing issues. If you are considering rhinoplasty you need to let your surgeon know about the breathing issues if any. In that case your surgeon will assess the cause of nasal airway obstruction and decide whether you would need septorhinoplasty or only reduction rhinoplasty.Thank you for your email.
