Q. My son is 11 and has large nostrils and he is teased about it everyday at school. Is he able to get to smaller and roughly how much would it costs,

 

A. Thank you for your enquiry. I am amazed at the behaviour in our schools and I’m sorry to hear that your son is suffering because of it. It is rather unfair to operate on him at this stage, when his nose is still undergoing considerable development, which may be influenced by the surgery. Surgery of the nose in young children is documented and possible, but typically takes place in the context of cleft lip and palate congenital problems. In the first instance, I would strongly advocate discussing with the teachers at the school and the parents of the children that are bullying him. Perhaps if this approach fails, there may be scope for surgical adjustment of the size of the nostrils. I think in this situation there may be a role for carrying out the surgery through the NHS channels, and I suspect that your GP would support this.

Q. I had a closed rhinoplasty 18 months ago to remove a hump, shorten my nose and to lift the tip slightly. The results were an inprovement but im a little disappointed with the profile as I wanted more of a slope. Would revision surgery be an option only 18 months later?,

 

A. Thank you for your enquiry. 12 month is considered adequate time for the tissues to settle sufficiently, so that a revision procedure can be performed. Therefore, 18 months is even better, but you do not need to wait longer than that if you wish to discuss a revision. Planning the surgery with computer imaging will facilitate your communication with the surgeon regarding what it is that you would like to achieve. There is no doubt that the results of surgery will be somewhat different from the computer simulation, but clarity with the plan is always beneficial.

A. Thank yu fo r your question. Because of the more limited scope of non-surgical reshaping of the nose, it does depend on what your target is. It is possible to evaluate in the consultation the degree of change that you seek using computer simulation and planning. Based on this, it is more reasonable to decide whether a nonsurgical approach would give you a result that you are happy with. It will also allow planning for the material to use for the augmentation and associated costs.

I’m afraid I tend to do this surgery after the age of 18, allowing for a more complete development of the face, which helps when determining the general reshaping of the nose. Q. Im 43 and considering having Rhinoplasty surgery. My query is about having difficulty breathing post surgery as I’ve heard that this is often the case. Is this true?,

Whilst it is true that in the early period after surgery (4-6 weeks) the nasal airway is tighter in a larger proportion of patients, for long term breathing difficulties the numbers are much smaller. The complexity of the surgery involved is one factor that influences the level of risk, with an additional element being related to significant reductions in the size of the nose.

Q. I am interested in revision rhinoplasty (original op. was in 2002). Can you advise how many of these procedures you have performed?,
