I broke my nose when playing rugby 2 years ago

Q. I broke my nose when playing rugby 2 years ago, is it possible to fix it now even though the damage was done a while ago? The bridge is very mis-shapen and bent, also I cant breathe properly through 1 nostril, how will you fix that?,

A. Thank you for your enquiry. The damage to your nose can be repaired at any time. The breathing problem you describe is caused by deviation of the septum which will have happened at the time of the injury. This is caused by a fracture of the septum which is dealt with by removing part of th edamaged septum and correcting the deviation to ensure that the airways are clear. This surgery is called a septorhinoplasty which is perfromed under a general anaesthetic as a day case. Please call Anne or Kirstie on 0845 009 2775 who will be happy to assist you further. Best regards

Is there a procedure just for reducing the size of the nostrils without changing the profile and shape of the nose?

Q. I have massive nostrils, my nose itself is fine size and shape wise it just my nostrils look awfully large. Is there a procedure just for reducing the size of the nostrils without changing the profile and shape of the nose?,

A. Yes you can have the nostrils reduced only, it leaves a scar in the crease where the nostrils meet the cheek. It is called Alar reduction and can be done under local anaesthesia. best wishes Barbara www.barbarajemec.com

I am thinking of having a septoplasty for my breathing which is very bad

Q. I am thinking of having a septoplasty for my breathing which is very bad and more than likely caused playing rugby where I lost count number of times it was flattened. It is very bad at night and leads to heavy snoring. Do you think a septoplasty would improve this and also stop my snoring (before my wife leaves me) Also I can only take two weeks off work so after a septoplasty how much swelling of the nose is there is likely to be. I realise that it is going to have to be some time off the sport.,

A. I am sorry your snoring is such a problem. Yes, a septorhinoplasty can help snoring, but it may not be the only reason for you snoring: The soft palate can be shortened (UVPP), you can get various teethguards which prevent your jaw falling back when you are asleep (and obstructing your airway),-and you presumably already sleep in the recovery position (and not on your back). If you have a truly flattened nose, you probably need a rib graft to give it some support. If you are going to continue playing rugby are you not going to get the nose flattened again? Two weeks is fine for recovery, the final result is only visible in 9 months’ time (it doesn’t mean it takes 9 months for it to change it is a gradual process), but men usually swell more than women and because you have a thicker skin, subtle changes are not so prominent, but this isn’t about the way the nose looks is it, it is about your breathing. Have you seen someone who is a specialist in snoring? See www.barbarajemec.com for more information on rhinoplasties. Best wishes Barbara

I had septoplasty to correct breathing problems a year ago but the problem still seems to exist

Q. I had septoplasty to correct breathing problems a year ago but the problem still seems to exist and now I have developed a continuous ringing sound in both of my ears. This has only happened since surgery and is not something that I can put up with for much longer. Do you have any ideas what the ringing in my ears could be and if so what kind of surgery is going to correct the problem along with my breathing. I would say it is only 20% better than before surgery but this ringing has made quality of life much worse so I have to get something done about it. If you could let me know you thoughts that would be great and then I can look at coming in for a consultation to discuss things further.,

A. Thank you for your inquiry. You would be better seeing an ENT specialist and possibly a neurologist for this combination of problems. If you are based in London, I would recommend seeing Mr William Grant who is an ENT surgeon consulting privately from the Cromwell hospital.

I really want a nose job but I have been told that I wont be able to breathe out of my nose for months

Q. I really want a nose job but I have been told that I wont be able to breathe out of my nose for months and this really worries me as I breath quite heavily through my nose and am worried it will leave me feeling like I am suffocating. Is this something that is commonly asked and is any reassurances you can give me if I proceed with surgery?,

A. Thank you for your inquiry. Whilst it is true that the nose feel stuffy in the early postoperative period, most people manage to breathe reasonably well shortly after the operation. Very frequently I use silicon internal nasal splints for my patients, and this means that during the first week it is difficult to breathe through the nose all together. The splints come out after one week together with external splint, and at that point breathing becomes reasonably good.

I have a very large nose, its completely bent and I cannot breathe out of my right nostril

Q. I have a very large nose, its completely bent and I cannot breathe out of my right nostril at all, I used to suffer from severe nose bleeds as a child, I spoke to my GP recently about my breathing problems due to my right nostril is of no use, He’s referring me to an ENT specialist however I want to know will they reshape my nose as well as rectify my deviated septum? This is obviously if they determine I need surgery, also I am getting extremely depressed about my looks due to this as people tend to notice how big it is and make nasty comments, I am already diagnosed with depression and I want to know if this will enhance the chances of me being able to get my entire nose fixed?,

A. Thank you very much for your enquiry, it does sound as if you are having a significant breathing difficulties through your nose. You’re right, you’re GP is right that often these conditions are treated by ENT specialists who can look for the cause of the blockage in the inside of the nose. Most ENT specialists will also be able to reshape your nose if reshaping straightens your nose if you so wished. Alternatively, this surgery can be performed by plastic surgeons and we have a number of specialist nose surgeons here at aurora clinics. Is it possible that cosmetic surgery can correct a blocked nose as it feels as if i have some kind of nasal obstruction

Q. Hi. I am 65 and my nose has drooped at i have aged. Is it possible that cosmetic surgery can correct a blocked nose as it feels as if i have some kind of nasal obstruction.
