Q. Im wondering if you could help me, over the past 6 or 7 years the cartilages in the tip of my nose has split and become very noticable.Im now left with what looks like a lump on the left side of my nose. i can actually twist it and hear it click back to normal.I experience numbness n pain every so often. I have not experienced any trauma to my nose so cant understand why it has done this. This has left me very self consious and is effecting me self essteem. im wondering if you could give me any insight to why this has happened and if surgery is my only option, thank you,
A. Thank you for your enquiry. The only thing I can assume based on your description, is that you may have had an injury to the nose in the past that has led to fracture of the cartilages, and after the swelling has decreased and the scar tissue has become softer, you have started to notice the changes. This can easily be several years down the line from the injury. It is however just an educated guess, and I would need to examine your nose in order to be able to give you some answers regarding management. Another factor that contributes, is that in time, the skin of the nose tip can become either thicker or thinner. If it becomes thinner, the underlying cartilages will show more.
