Deviated Septum
The process to fix a deviated septum is quite simple in theory. But, you will need to factor in all conditions before you can make up your mind and go in for it. There are complications that you need to be aware of and willing to face if you are determined to go in for this surgery. Once you have learnt about all the risks involved, you can decide about whether or not you would want to go in for this surgery. Most surgeons guarantee a safe procedure, but if you prior conditions like sinusitis or allergies, you will want to think twice about going in for this procedure.
Before the operation
There is nothing much that you need to keep in mind to prepare before the actual surgery begins. You will need to brace yourself mentally, and not be on medications of any other kind. Most surgeons will administer either general or local anesthesia to make it a truly painless operation. Surgeons might also make use of endoscopes to look at the nasal passageway and have an understanding related to the shape of your septum. Based on this, a procedure will be drafted and the surgeon will be able to tell you exactly how your nose will look like post surgery.
During the surgery
In most cases, the surgery is quite painless. A recent statistics has revealed that over 300,000 Americans had some form of surgery in order to correct their deviated septum. Hence, you should have faith that your procedure is not something special and a routine procedure that surgeons perform on a regular basis. To fix the septum, the surgeon will work through the nostrils and make an incision to separate the mucosa from the underlying cartilage and the bone. The bent cartilage will then either be straightened or replaced, followed by the replacement of the mucosa over the cartilage and the bone.
Following the surgery
You will normally experience a lot of pain following the surgery, but this is only temporary. The surgeon will prescribe some painkillers to deal with the pain and you should feel fine after taking them. There will also be some antibiotics to fight infections. Avoid taking aspirin as this will aggravate the bleeding. Take care to not involve in excessively physical activities. This is only to prevent getting injured again and need a Revision Rhinoplasty. Also, take care to prevent infections from developing within your nose. Have cold water showers to reduce pain and relieve swelling.
